The Merry Widow Plan Ahead

The Merry Widow

A delicious confection starring Danielle de Niese

The Merry Widow is a delicious confection: a light-hearted look at love amid the champagne and glitter of Art Deco France. Ladies sweep into ballrooms in silk fishtail gowns, and dapper gents in suits and patent leather shoes kiss your hand and fill up your dance card. Melbourne-born international star Danielle de Niese plays the beguiling widow, inadvertant heiress of a city's fortune after just eight days of marriage. Fearing the loss of their riches, the society set are determined that she must wed a local, and soon, before any foreigner catches her gaze. But she's got a history with the man they've got in mind, and to complicate matters, the widow isn't the only one turning heads. There's plenty of love to go around in this story of amorous encounters and elegant romance.

The legendary pianist returns

NOTE: With enormous disappointment, we announce that pianist Martha Argerich has had to withdraw from her Sydney appearances on 29, 30 June and 1 July owing to illness which has prevented her travelling. In her stead, we welcome back Chinese pianist Yuja Wang, who will perform in an unchanged program conducted by Charles Dutoit. Following her 2015 performances with the SSO and recital, Yuja Wang was described by The Australian classical music reviewer Murray Black as a “top-class virtuoso… With her glamorous stage attire, popular YouTube videos and dedicated social media following... Yuja Wang is the model of a modern classical pianist.” We are delighted that she has agreed to join us in Sydney at such short notice to perform Beethoven's spirited Piano Concerto No.1. This will be framed by the Australian premiere of Stravinsky's Funeral Song, written on the death of Rimsky-Korsakov – rediscovered in 2015 – and the high-spirited music of Falla's Three-Cornered Hat ballet. Dutoit has assembled irresistible melodies, thrilling Spanish rhythms and the intoxicating whirlwind of La Valse to show the SSO at its very best in music close to his heart.
