About the event

Experience an exotic tale of jealousy and temptation in Bizet’s The Pearlfishers. It’s pearl diving season in colonial Ceylon. Old friends Zurga and Nadir reminisce of a woman they both loved but who Nadir secretly pursued years ago. When the racketeer Nourabad brings a beautiful priestess to bless the fishermen, Nadir instantly recognises her – it’s Léïla, the object of his obsession.

The pair meet in secret, but know their love is perilous in the face of Zurga’s jealousy and Nourabad’s fanaticism. Can the bonds of friendship withstand love’s temptation?

Opera Queensland presents The Pearlfishers, a soul-stirring tale of friendship broken by rivalry. Master storyteller Michael Gow and designer Robert Kemp bring Bizet’s romantic opera to life with vibrant scenes of Ceylon and a stunning score, complete with the world-famous duet, ‘Au fond du temple saint’. Step into an exotic world of forbidden romance with a star-filled cast led by Australia’s prima diva, Emma Matthews, tenor Aldo Di Toro, baritone Grant Doyle making his OperaQ debut and bass Andrew Collis.

Just in time for Mother's Day, buy a ticket and be automatically entered into the draw to win a pair of Australian South Sea keshi pearl earrings for mum from Paspaley, valued at $1,580. OperaQ is proud to partner with iconic Australian luxury brand Paspaley and the competition winner will be announced in the June issue of OnQ - OperaQ’s monthly e-newsletter and on Opera Queensland’s website and social media channels.
