About the event

This concert gets off to a jaunty start with The Chairman Dances - an 'orchestral foxtrot' from John Adams' opera Nixon in China. It's the personal choice of David Robertson, an Adams champion. After the flying visit to China, this concert picks up the Russian tradition with Rachmaninoff's Second Concerto - possibly the most popular piano concerto of all time - played by Chinese-American pianist George Li.

Even if you've never heard the concerto, you might recognise the big romantic tunes lifted for 'All By Myself' (Eric Carmen, Bridget Jones's Diary) and 'Full Moon and Empty Arms' (made famous by Frank Sinatra). Prokofiev's popular Fifth Symphony returns high energy and orchestral virtuosity to the mix for a thrilling second half.
